Chapter Forty-Five
30 July 2018
Scarlett
His face seems to move in slow motion â his eyes widen, mouth drops, his mind probably a muddle as to what to say to me. His eyelashes flutter and for a second I think heâs going to pass out.
âYou canât be?â he says at last, dragging his hand down his face, distorting his features.
âWell, I am.â How Iâm enjoying this moment of victory.
âYou told me you were on the pill,â he whispers.
âIs that what I should tell my mum you said?â
âHave you told her?â
The look on his face â as if Iâm squeezing his balls with pliers.
âNot yet, but Iâll have to at some point, wonât I?â
âAre you absolutely a hundred per cent sure itâs mine, I mean, if thereâs even remotely the chance it could be someone elseâsâ¦â
I almost choke on my own tongue. âYou think Iâm a slut, donât you? Thereâs been no one except you.â So thatâs it, he thinks the mouse is purer than pure, because sheâd never be unfaithful to him.
âOkay, Iâm sorry, I had to ask.â He blinks at me, his eyes screwed up small like heâs not sure who I am any more. âHow⦠how far gone?â
âAbout ten weeks.â
He presses his fingers to his eyes and a few moments later they open again. âYouâll have a termination, though, wonât you?â
âHang on, what about what I want?â I hold my hand up. He doesnât want me to mess up his little family.
âWhat about your future? I thought you were saving up to do a journalism course?â
âThis is a human being weâre talking about here.â I point to my stomach. Even Iâm convinced Iâm pregnant now. I flick my hair over my shoulder. He should be saying heâs over the moon and that of course heâll leave the mouse and be with me. But he shakes his head, stares at his trainers. âIâll give you money. Whatever it takes. Youâre such a talented girl, I donât want you to ruin your life.â
Jesus, heâs really trying to wriggle out of it. âIâm just a girl now, am I? Is that how you see me? Why would having our baby be ruining my life? Youâre only thinking about yourself. What if I want this baby?â
âNo, of course youâre not a girl. Youâre a sexy young woman. But please donât do this.â He walks round in a circle, hand to his head. âYou canât have this baby. You just canât.â
âThen leave her and we can be together.â
âHow can I when sheâs about to give birth? Look, give me a few weeks. Once the babyâs born Iâll be able to think more clearly. Iâll be ready to make a decision, I promise.â He covers his forehead with his palm.
âDo you really mean it?â
âYes, of course I do. But I canât promise anything, okay?â
âOkay.â He thinks Iâm stupid.
âYou know youâre my special girl, donât you?â He takes my hand and rubs my skin with his thumb like that first time he touched me in his classroom.
âIn the meantime, what am I supposed to do?â
âLook after yourself.
